Colors

Colors can really make or break your final image in your portrait session.  No worries!  Tammy Bicknell Photography is here to help.

The colors you choose for your family to wear on your portrait session should depend on what you are looking for in your final product. Are you looking for something more traditional and classic or a more fun & funky look? Colors play an important role in the mood of your portrait. Coordinating outfits is a timeless look and will still be in style through the decades to come.  However you don’t all have to wear the same color pants and shirts. There are innumerable ways to coordinate colors. For instance you can have the ladies in one color and the gents in another. Another option is to have the parents in one color and children in another. Pay particular attention to the color scheme, complimentary, analogous or monochromatic.  Not sure what color combination to use? Take a look at my color chart that gives you a hand in choosing your style.

In the figure below, each group of squares represents 6 different color schemes broken down by neutral, complimentary or monochromatic.  Black, grey & white are neutral colors and pair well with about any color you choose.  Each circle represents one family member in your portrait.

Breakdown of color schemes
Row 1. Bright Color with grey- Consider grey a neutral color that matches well with any bright color.
Row 2. Complimentary Colors- These are opposite colors on the color wheel and pair well for a more fun & funky look.

Row 3. Monochromatic Colors- Monochromatic color schemes are lighter and darker shades of color from the same hue.
Row 4. Bright Color with black- Consider black another neutral that goes well with just about any color and particularly bright colors.
Row 5. Bright Complimentary Colors
Row 6. Monochromatic Colors
Row 7. Subtle Complimentary Colors

Analogous Color Scheme-Defined as any three colors that are side by side on a twelve-part color wheel.
Here are some examples of analogous colors schemes that pair well together.

Let me capture a beautiful image of your family, with plenty of time to have prints and cards ready for the upcoming Christmas holiday.
